Abstract
This study examined the effects of embodied cognition through arts-based strategies on the mathematical competencies of Grade 7 learners. The pretest results revealed low to developing levels of competency, with a mean score of 2.69 (38.46%), indicating limited understanding of integers. Following the implementation of the intervention, the posttest mean score increased to 5.15 (73.63%), demonstrating a substantial improvement in learners’ mathematical performance. Among the competencies assessed, the greatest gain was observed in locating integers on a number line, with scores increasing from 41.67% to 91.03%. Meanwhile, learners’ ability to perform operations with integers improved from 19.78% to 58.24%. Statistical analysis showed a significant difference between the pretest and posttest scores across all assessed competencies (p < .001), confirming the effectiveness of embodied cognition through arts-based strategies in enhancing learners’ mathematical understanding and achievement. Furthermore, the study developed lesson exemplars that serve as practical instructional resources for teachers seeking to integrate movement-based and arts-informed approaches in mathematics teaching. The findings support the incorporation of embodied cognition strategies as an innovative approach to promote learner engagement, conceptual understanding, and improved mathematical performance.
